Omri Casspi to sign two-year deal with Rockets

There must have been something about Casspi that the Rockets really liked

The Rockets are starting to fill roles around their new big man.

The team is signing 6-foot-9 small forward Omri Casspi to a two-year deal, according to a Yahoo! Sports report.

Casspi, out of Israel, has not had a ton of success in the league, but he was a pretty good three-point shooter in his first two NBA seasons, connecting on 36.9% from downtown while averaging 10.3 points and 4.5 boards as a rookie in 2009-10. His minutes and efficiency have steadily declined since then.

The Rockets were rumored to have an interest in Casspi after the last trade deadline, so it’s not too surprising to see his name re-surface here. It’s a typical Daryl Morey move — find a talent you think is undervalued and sign him to a low-risk, potentially high-reward contract that has non-guaranteed money or team options for later seasons, which is the case for the second year of Casspi’s deal here.

Little-known fact: The Kings took Casspi with the 23rd pick of the 2009 NBA Draft. That was Houston’s pick, traded to Sacramento in the Ron Artest deal.
