Yao Ming rolled his right ankle during Wednesday’s practice, but both Yao and the team said he was fine — there was no concern at all about this being anything but mild. Yao exited the scrimmage as a result, but it was about when he had to come out anyway (due to his 12-minute time limit in scrimmages).
Note this was Yao’s right ankle, and not his surgically repaired left foot.
Yao was getting some treatment on the side when we came in and was in good spirits, and one thing you learn quickly about Yao — when he’s in a good mood, he unleashes his great sense of humor.
When asked if he was comfortable jumping to block shots, Yao quipped: “Do you remember [me jumping] before I had surgery?”
Yao said he felt “comfortable” being back with his teammates and that the team is focusing on their defense.
“We’re building on that, and today we’re very concentrated on building our defensive chemistry,” said Yao. “I think we did well. Defense is about attitude. Maybe we’re not the most talented team in the league, but we have given the most effort.”
Yao’s top goal for camp, however, was clear.
“Just try to stay healthy,” said Yao. “That’s the number one priority now.”
