Carl Landry is just flat out lucky to be alive.
The Rockets forward admitted on Wednesday that he's been sweating and can't stop thinking about how close he came to the end of his life after an incident early Tuesday morning where he was attacked and shot in the leg.
"I feel good just to be alive," said Landry on Wednesday. "The situation that happened was really scary and it could have happened to anybody. I'm just blessed to be here."
Landry started to decribe the incident in full detail and as you hear it, you quickly forget about basketball, getting a clear picture of how truly scary it was and how fortunate he is to still be breathing.
"I was sideswiped once," said Landry, referring to getting first hit while driving his SUV. "They turned around and hit me again on the other side. I ran into a big streetlight. The car was totalled at the time and I knew something was going on, like they were looking for somebody. Both of the guys got out of the car. I tried to plead my case to say I wasn't the guy they were looking for but immediately they started shooting. Two shots were fired and the second shot hit me in the left calf."
Landry then took off on foot.
"I ran about, man, I would say about 6 blocks," said Landry. "After they fired two shots, one of the guys chased me for about a block. I was able to outrun the shooter and I hid between a house and a fence. I was so frightened, you know, so I started ringing doorbells like crazy. One person came down and said he was going to call 9-1-1. I saw a cop car drive by about 20 minutes after he said that. I went up to the cop car and they helped me."
"I was out there in between the fence and the house like bleeding to death. I've never bled so much in my life," said Landry. "Blood was coming out of my legs so fast and I was just hoping and thanking God that I didn't pass out. Hey, I'm here and I got a smile on my face and I thank God for that.
Despite the blood loss, Landry reiterated again how fortunate he was that he wasn't killed.
"The shooter was 10 yards or less away," said Landry. "I'm 6-9 and I had a bright shirt on, so I don't know how he missed, but thank God he did and hit my lower part of my leg."
